WHO ARE PROGRESSIVE INDIGENOUS?
PROGRESSIVE INDIGENOUS FOUNDER
When my colleagues asked me to put together a bio for this website, I wanted those who read this to understand where I am from and what has driven me to put together an organisation.
I am a proud indigenous man who grew up in the Gladstone/Bundaberg Region and have worked and travelled in various parts of Australia. I am from a modest indigenous family of mud crabbers that began with my grandfather, Bob Appo. My father along with a number of my uncles were crabbers and now being on the water, putting the pots in, is my happy place. It’s what I do when I am not working.
INDIGENOUS PARTICIPATION & ENGAGEMENT
Over the past 20 years running projects and businesses I have seen a big shift in thinking and commitment towards indigenous participation and engagement. It all started with more traditional labour hire initiatives such as traineeships and apprenticeships. Then there were Indigenous employment programs and funding incentives for employers to employ indigenous workers.
Over the last 5 years, there has been a push for the development of Indigenous businesses. This is where it gets tricky.
- Contracts with tier 1 & 2 companies
- Often complex contracts with extended payment terms
- Onerous reporting
- Higher safety requirements
- Organisations require adequate systems – quality, safety, environmental
- Need for financial capacity/cashflow to execute the works
- Need for contractual acumen and experience to administrate contracts
- Fixed rates –higher risk (not just labour hire)
- Requirement for HR/IR Policies/processes
All these make it difficult for the smaller Indigenous businesses to participate in the delivery of these high-profile projects.
BREAKING THE CYCLE
This is where we come in! The Progressive Indigenous team consists of leaders who have 20 years’ experience delivering major projects for tier 1 & 2 contractors and clients. Not only will we price works for our clients’, but we will also bring those keen Indigenous businesses & individuals along for the journey. We will make direct contact with local Indigenous groups & deliver real outcomes.
We are very passionate about breaking the cycle. We want our employees, Indigenous partners & friends to financially support their families.
“The measure of our success is the impact that we have on others”
I am a degree qualified Engineer and I encourage families to further their education and take on corporate/operational roles in the Construction Industry & beyond.
INDIGENOUS EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM
I started the Indigenous Employment Program at Bundaberg Regional Council where we tripled Indigenous participation in the local Organisation.
Nothing makes me smile more than to see those participants thrive from that point. Knowing that I gave them a start & then they have taken the ball & run with it. It’s an amazing feeling!
“Progressive – Lets Move forward together!”

Founder & Managing Director
WE PAY OUR RESPECTS TO THE TRADITIONAL CUSTODIANS OF THE LAND WHERE WE WORK, AS WELL AS ACROSS THE LANDS IN WHICH WE TRAVEL THROUGH. WE ALSO ACKNOWLEDGE OUR ELDERS PAST AND PRESENT.
OUR LEADERSHIP TEAM
I am a proud Gubbi Gubbi man from the Gladstone/Bundaberg Region, specifically from a modest indigenous family of mud crabbers that began with my grandfather, Bob Appo. I am degree qualified Engineer, & I encourage families to further their education & take on corporate/operational roles in the Construction Industry & beyond.
I have more than 20 years of experience in delivering a variety of small & large infrastructure projects throughout Queensland. This includes several Queensland road & infrastructure projects, namely the Gateway Bridge Upgrade Project ($2 Billion) Comalco Alumina Refinery Project ($400m) & various key regional road upgrade projects, including NDRRA Funded Programs. I also have significant experience working with various local & state governments in the region, notably as Acting Director of Infrastructure at Gladstone Regional Council.

I am a proud family man who loves to spend time with my Mob in the bush. Camping, fishing & riding horses with my wife & beautiful children is where you find me on my time off. I travelled to Australia over 20 years ago and landed in Queensland, & it has been my home ever since. My first job was in Mackay, so I quickly learned about outback culture & blending in whilst I travelled. Fishing was my main hobby whilst in Mackay, & when we moved to the Gold Coast a few years later, and I kept catching fish, plus I learned how to surf, & became hooked on catching sand worms!
My career has focused on developing my skills, then transferring them to others. I have always had a keen interest in developing young supervisors and engineers, so am well versed in creating a team of people through organic growth & training – this enables them to understand each other and deliver the best results. With a keen interest in organisational culture & behaviour, I drive myself to ensure my teams are supported in the workplace. I am passionate about promoting an enjoyable place to work, & firmly believe in creating & driving positive behaviours to create a vibrant culture.
I look forward to welcoming you to the Progressive Team!
